It is the longest running LBGT television program in history and is a three-time Emmy Award nominee.

In the Life is a three-time Emmy Award nominee (including Outstanding Educational Programming) and a six-time award winner from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. In April 2004, GLAAD honored us with the prestigious Barbara Gittings Award “for contributions to LGBT media.” In 2006, our report on aging with AIDS was honored with the television industry’s Telly Award, an international competition honoring outstanding television video and film productions. Also in 2006, we won the Seigenthaler Award from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association for "excellence in network television." Previous winners of this national journalism award were CBS News' 60 minutes and ABC News' 20/20. Most recently, ITLM was honored by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer for our role in preserving and sharing LGBT history.

The series was regularly commentated by Tony Award-winning actor Harvey Fierstein from 2001-2004.
